Hanauma Bay is
located on the Southeast side of the island of Oahu and
was named “America’s Best Beach.” The
climate here is mostly hot and dry which is perfect diving
weather for all you diving enthusiasts! The floor of the
bay actually used to be the crater of an ancient volcano
that flooded when the outer wall collapsed and the ocean
rushed in to fill the gap.
This
bay was declared a protected marine life conservation
area and underwater park in 1967. This is known
to be the best protected cove for diving and
snorkeling for it has a diverse population
of sea critters and a large, prosperous coral
reef. Divers are frequently introduced to a
rainbow of reef inhabitants, including tangs,
parrotfish, butterfly fish, moorish idols,
surgeonfish, the state fish known as the humahumanumamumaapua’a
or triggerfish and many more. Along with octopus,
squid, honu or sea turtles, eels, jellyfish
and sea urchins.
